At Madison Taylor Design, we specialize in high-end residential design that brings together every detail; from concept sketches to the finishing touches. Each year, we take on a select number of integrated design and build projects, managing them from start to finish through our in-house construction services. Every project is an opportunity to create something deeply personal, purposeful, and lasting.

Our latest update brings us back to Project Lake Joe, a custom Muskoka cottage design that’s taking shape beautifully despite the winter weather.

As Madison shares, “We’re back up at Project Lake Joe and it is freezing; if you can’t tell by my breath and my red nose!” Even with snow on the ground, progress has been impressive. Crews continue to move quickly, staying focused on bringing the details to life as framing wraps up and the interiors begin to take shape.

During our recent site visit, Madison walked through the home with the site supervisor to review the finer details; ensuring that the design drawings support each stage of the build before drywall installation begins. This step is part of what makes our integrated design process so effective: every element is pre-planned, minimizing delays and keeping the construction timeline on track.

Kyle, the site supervisor with Tamarack North, has been working closely with our team to coordinate every phase of the build. “The plans that Madison has put out are very detailed. Not a lot of drawings come through with that level of finish; and that’s one thing I really like about working with her,” he says.

In recent weeks, major milestones have been achieved, including full window installation and exterior waterproofing. With the custom windows in place and the roofing sealed, the team has begun exterior finishing; installing siding, soffit, and fascia. Inside, crews are preparing for drywall, and the overall structure is taking on its finished form.

One of the most exciting milestones for the Madison Taylor team has been seeing the window package come together. “The windows are such a key element of this design,” Madison explains. “We wanted to take that traditional Muskoka cottage aesthetic and give it a modern, simplified feel; larger panes of glass, clean detailing, and an emphasis on the view.”

From the front entry, the home opens up into a vaulted main space that frames panoramic views of Lake Joseph. Every decision; from the glass proportions to the trim details; was made to highlight the natural surroundings and invite the landscape into the home.

For Melissa, one of our interior designers, stepping onto site was a moment of excitement: “I’ve been looking at these drawings for a long time and planning everything, so it’s exciting to finally walk through the space. At this stage, I can see how the interiors will come together, but it’s not quite my reward yet; it’s still a work in progress.”

Despite the challenges that come with winter construction in Muskoka, progress remains steady. While certain elements like concrete and exterior stonework must pause until warmer weather, the team continues with interior framing, roofing, and exterior siding. As Madison notes, “The sun is shining today, which makes everything feel a little easier. It’s been a great winter overall for building.”

With a tight move-in deadline of July 1, every decision matters. Because our design-build process ensures all selections, finishes, and layouts are finalized before construction begins, we’re able to maintain a fast-paced schedule without sacrificing quality.

“This project has been such a rewarding collaboration,” Madison shares. “It’s our first time working with some of these trades, and they’ve been incredibly thorough, detail-oriented, and professional. The teamwork and communication have been seamless.”

As Project Lake Joe continues to progress, the excitement grows—not just for the finished home, but for the process itself: watching a vision come to life through integrated residential design, collaboration, and craftsmanship.
