Designing a home is always meaningful—but leading your very first project is something else entirely. For designer Greg Kirkpatrick, that milestone took shape on the shores of Lake Rosseau in Muskoka, in the form of a custom-designed cottage that balances privacy, grandeur, and warmth. This project continues to stand out not only for its architectural* innovation, but for the personal story woven into every design decision.

A Unique Muskoka Waterfront Design Challenge

Waterfront properties in Muskoka are typically designed to maximize open views throughout the home. This cottage required a different approach. The homeowners had a very specific vision:

  • Complete privacy in one wing of the home
  • Expansive lake views in the entertaining wing

This layout requirement introduced a complex planning challenge. The solution came through integrated architectural* and landscape design, to ensure the home feels both open and intentionally private. The positioning of the structure, sightlines, and outdoor spaces were carefully considered to give the owners exactly what they wanted without compromise.

This approach exemplifies Madison Taylor Design’s belief that great architecture responds to both people and place.

Blending Two Distinct Design Styles Into One Cohesive Vision

Inside the cottage, the design story became even more nuanced. With a husband and wife who brought very different personal tastes, the challenge was not just aesthetic—but relational.

Through thoughtful spatial planning, material selection, and architectural* detailing, the home evolved into something that feels:

  • Grand and refined yet warm and inviting
  • Architecturally bold but deeply comfortable
  • Sophisticated without losing its sense of retreat

The result is a cottage that feels both luxurious and lived-in, striking the perfect balance between statement design and everyday comfort.

A Cohesive Cottage and Boathouse Design

One of Greg’s personal favorite elements of the project is the strong architectural* relationship between the main cottage and the boathouse. Instead of functioning as two separate structures, the buildings were designed as a cohesive pair.

From the water, the visual impact is striking. As you enter the bay, the consistent architecture creates a unified shoreline presence—intentional, dramatic, and distinctly Muskoka.

This exterior cohesion reinforces Madison Taylor Design’s commitment to holistic site design, where every structure contributes to the overall architectural* narrative.

Designing With the Landscape, Not Against It

The Lake Rosseau property offered extraordinary natural beauty—but it also demanded respect. By designing the home in harmony with the shoreline, trees, and topography, the team ensured that the architecture felt rooted in its environment, not imposed upon it.

This seamless integration between building and landscape allows the home to feel timeless—as though it has always belonged there.

A Full-Circle Moment for Designer Greg Kirkpatrick

For Greg, this project carries a meaning that extends far beyond its technical success. Long before he was designing real homes, he was building them with Lego bricks as a child—exploring scale, form, and creativity through his hands.

To now lead the design of a custom Muskoka cottage is a true full-circle moment. That same childhood passion still drives every project today: a love of craftsmanship, creativity, and shaping spaces that people will cherish for generations.
