Project Tea Lake Cottage began with a rare opportunity: a grandfathered lakeside footprint positioned exceptionally close to the water. Set along one of Muskoka’s quieter, more intimate lakes, preserving this relationship to the shoreline became the guiding principle behind every design decision.

The project presented a meaningful planning challenge. Retaining the non-conforming setback required 50% of the original structure to remain; an undertaking that called for experience, strategic problem-solving, and close coordination with the municipality. Guided by our team’s expertise, we were able to secure the outcome our clients valued most: preserving the cottage’s rare relationship to the lake.

As the design evolved, the scope expanded into a cohesive four-building retreat, including the renovated main cottage, a guest sleeping cabin, a garage and storage building, and a boathouse. Each structure was designed to serve a distinct purpose while contributing to a unified architectural language across the site.

Rooted in Classic Craftsman design, the architecture is layered with subtle nautical influence. A palette of deep blue siding, crisp white trim, steel roofing, and locally quarried Muskoka granite grounds the buildings in their setting. Inside, warm wood tones and natural stone continue the story, creating interiors that feel timeless, welcoming, and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.

With living spaces oriented toward the lake, nearly 270-degree views and an exceptionally close-to-water patio create an experience rarely achievable under today’s regulations. Developed collaboratively across architecture, interiors, landscape, and construction, the finished result closely reflects the original vision.

Spaces like this aren’t just designed to be seen; they’re designed to be felt, remembered, and returned to, season after season, generation after generation. In this project reveal, Founder Madison and Lead Designer Dean share insight into the thoughtful process behind Project Tea Lake Cottage, designed for gathering and longevity.
